Ideas Generating

My first idea is to create a Radio Documentary covering how different wars impacted the evolution of aircraft, the documentary will be split into three parts with each show being a total of 15 minutes in length. I aim to include interviews with a diverse range of people to get different opinions on this topic as well as this I may also include some vox pops to gain another perspective from a different set of people, the impact of this is it allows the listener to form their own opinions and engage with my product. I want to create this product because it will raise awareness about vintage aircraft and hopefully more and more people will start looking towards the skies which helps charities who restore old aircraft to keep history in the air.
I hope to achieve by the end of this project a three-part documentary series that will be engaging for the audience to listen to as well as this I want to ensure I have an authentic product which means everything I say is fact checked because I want the show to be informative as well as engaging. This idea is relevant for today’s climate because history is incredibly important and the changes we have made to aircraft in the last 100 years is incredible, I believe that this history should be talked about for generations to come as technology has come so far for example in the Battle of Brittain we used propellor driven Supermarine Spitfires yet nowadays we are creating aircraft that can not only fly themselves but exceed the speed of sound.
I will use a variety of skills in my FEP in hope to achieve a high grade this includes using my knowledge of the radio to work my way around our setup here at Barnsley College, I need to use these skills that I’ve acquired on the radio to produce an engaging and fluid show , the impact of doing this is that the show will seem well thought out and professional therefore it’s easy to listen to and people get hooked straight away resulting in them listening on. Another skill I will need to use is using my phone to create powerful and engaging videos within the studio, during my project I want to incorporate a visual element that can be posted on the Vibe Radio Instagram account. Not only will this increase listenership, but it will also help grow the station.
I think by completing my FEP I will gain a wide range of skills that will help me progress into future roles, the skills that I will gain can be broken up into soft and hard skills such as the voiceovers and narration that will go into the radio show is a hard skill on the other hand the creativity of the project is a soft skill because creativity is classed as a personality trait. Another hard skill is technical troubleshooting which is absolutely essential for this project, during a live broadcast a number of things could go wrong as a result I need to know how to fix these issues and find solutions the impact of this skill is that if not acquired the show will sound poor and not well put together which may lead a listener to switch off the broadcast. On the other hand, my time management is a soft skill that I will need to perfect for this project because managing each interview is tedious and I need to ensure that the show sounds well put together and thought out. Finally, scriptwriting is an example of a hard skill that I will gain through this project as some parts of the package may have been prerecorded such as vox pops or previous interviews, the impact of this skill is it defines how the show will sound and what tone is set throughout the radio broadcast whether this be happy or sad. However, I will also gain the soft skill of sensitivity which I will need to make sure my package is output into the world with respect especially on sadder stories.
My idea is ambitious and challenging because I am trying to combine the world of radio with a visual element which could be a camera or phone being set up in the studio while I am live on the air, I believe by doing this it will not only make my package unique but it will be a different experience for the listeners who usually cannot put a face to the name. As well as this I am challenging myself to do a radio documentary which often isn’t heard however I believe it is the best way to output the information I want to share which is all about the evolution of aircraft. By doing this package I will need to obtain relevant sources I can use to gather information about the content but also how I technically put the show together, I will use sources such as the BBC and LBC as they have incredible speech led radio segments as well as this, I will also be using different websites such as history.com to fact check anything I say. By using these sources my project becomes credible and authentic as everything that is being broadcast has been checked to ensure that it is reliably sourced information.
My target audience for this project would be people who are interested in learning more about how the human race went from the small Bi Planes we saw in WW1 to the Supersonic Concorde we saw in the 90s/ 2000s, I believe this will predominantly be people over the age of 30 however I aim to inspire the younger generation to take a look up into the skies. To achieve this, I will use the Vibe Radio Instagram account for marketing purposes and advertise the product as well as where people can listen.
This project links to my progression plan because I am now certain I want to go into the world of radio as a presenter/ producer yet to do this I need to create engaging packages that are produced to a professional level as well as a standard that I am happy with, I hope by doing this project I will further help my future applications because I can work my way around an industry standard radio station and produce good quality content out of it!
This project could result in many issues and problems that I will have to overcome this includes interviewees cancelling and having to reschedule yet this comes down to time management and asking a person in enough time for them to get back to me before the show goes live, another problem is that technically many things could go wrong such as not changing the radio software to LIVE instead of AUTOFADE this results in me losing control of the station and I’m unable to add/ take things out of the schedule. To overcome these issues, I need to remain vigilant and look carefully into what I’m doing to minimise the risk of somethings going wrong.
To gain a high grade in this project I know I need to challenge myself to be unique and original which is why I’m incorporating a visual element but also I need to make sure that my theory work which includes research is as good if not better than the final project, I also need to make sure I’m creating a show that is exciting and people want to get up a listen to it this is done by using features and breaking up the show with interviews/ vox pops. I believe by doing these things I will be able to gain a high grade within this project.
I will analyse my progression within this project by doing small clips of me talking about each week and how I believe it has gone, this will show the examiner how I’m progressing towards my end goal of a professional sounding documentary. I will output my project onto my website however the visual elements will be posted on the radio station’s Instagram and me website as well.

My second idea is to rewrite the script with my already existing radio show called Round the Rinks, my show that I co- host with James is a news outlet for all things hockey. We incorporate games and interviews noun again to try and increase listenership as well as this we already have a large social media following both on TikTok and Instagram. My idea is to take the show and add more elements to it such as fan reactions and interviewing people at the hockey games to try and promote our brand, I also want to include interviews with professional players that play in the top divisions of hockey this differs from our usual show as we can usually only get responses from NIHL teams. I want to do this idea because hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, every game week we see more and more fans are selling out the arenas across the UK. I want to try and put hockey on the map through the use of radio which is completely unique, the impact of this is people can tune in throughout the UK and get direct information on games and fixtures which increase our listenership.
I hope to achieve a successful project that will invite more and more people into the world of hockey I already know and love, I want to try and appeal the sport to the younger generation too and not only get more people watching but also inspire the next generation of players so that everyone gets the chance to play this incredible sport. This project is very relevant in today’s climate because as I’ve said before each year when it comes to the big events in hockey they are selling out every time and on a couple of occasions teams have had to move to bigger arenas such as the Cardiff Devils. I believe also when the Sheffield Steelers won the Grand Slam last year that event got coverage on the BBC proving that hockey is becoming a sport that will take over the UK.
During my FEP I will use a wide range of skills to produce this radio show this includes using my skills and knowledge of social media, I will use these skills to get our product heard up and down the UK. To do this I will use hashtags that are relevant to my product this will help get our product seen by our target audience who are people who get excited about the words Ice Hockey. Another skill I will use is my knowledge of the radio station this help especially if something goes wrong I can find a solution consequently this doesn’t impact the final product and the show sounds professional.
I think by doing my FEP I will gain a variety of skills both soft and hard, firstly a soft skill is one that is a personality trait for example creativity while a hard skill is one that is technical such as troubleshooting the radio station. A soft skill I believe I will gain by doing the FEP will be my communication skills will advance and become more advanced this is really important for my product because the show needs to come across as clear and easy to listen to especially when conducting voiceovers and coordinating with interviewees. On the other hand a hard skill I will gain is my research skills will become a lot stronger as I will need to find and analyse different bits of information to make sure my product is interesting and engaging with my target audience, the impact of this is the show will be facts checked and credible meaning everything the listener hears is correct and accurate. Another soft skill I will acquire is my interpersonal skills which means I can successfully build a relationship with my guests and target audience which means the show sounds more appealing and will get a higher listenership however another hard skill I will gain is voice modulation meaning I can use my voice to evoke an emotion and this skills will allow me to maintain listener interest through the entire show.
This idea is challenging and ambitious because I want to include better interviews with top players and teams this includes the Grand Slam winning Sheffield Steelers, as well as this I want to include more reactions from fans this includes talking to the people who go to the hockey all the time and are diehard fans. By doing this in creating an authentic product that has never been seen before or heard before. However to create this product I would use sources such as BBC 5Live and TalkSPORT to understand how to make a successful sports based radio show I can then add and adapt different parts to make our show even better than before.
My target audience are people who live and breathe hockey this could be fans or players, most clubs have been around in the UK for over 30 years therefore there are thousands of fans up and down the country that could be interested in listening to us give our take on current hockey news. Yet we also appeal to people who may have only been to one game because we want to inspire them to keep going and supporting their team through thick and thin. To get the word out to our target audience we can use marketing strategies such as advertising through social media both on the Round the Rinks Instagram and the Vibe Radio Instagram by doing this we are increasing the chance of people tuning into us each week.
This project links to my intended progression plan because I’m desperate to go into radio and by doing a radio show it gives me another tool in my arsenal I can use when going into the industry because the project will require all the same research and planning that goes into the show on the BBC or even Capital.
There are many things that could go wrong during the creation of this project such as interviews cancelling yet the main issues I could face is poor time management as this hinders me getting the best interviews I can resulting in a mediocre show and this would not be my best work, to combat this I need to manage my time wisely and communicate with potential interviews as soon as possible. Another issue is that technically the station could stop outputting the show/ recording it however I would have to find a solution to this before I go on air this could result in a delay in the show which impacts the people waiting to listen to us therefore I need to test everything before going live so I have the chance to fix anything that’s not right.
To gain a high grade in this project I need to balance my research with my final product but I also need to make sure as I did this idea last year for my FMP that it will be better and with the added time I can add to the show to make it more engaging and get people interacting with what we do. To analyse my progression I would record a small voiceover segment each week to allow my examiner to know what I’m up to and how the show is progressing and the final shows would then be output onto my website and some clips would also be put on social media.

My third and final idea is to produce a series of short audio packages that would be played on the radio, these packages would be produced over a few weeks, and I would aim to do 3-5 packages on various topics. The packages I would produce would include interviews and vox pops to gain different perspective on a variety of stories, all the stories I would cover will be relevant to what is going on currently in the UK. I want to do this project because it is challenging however it will help inform people on current affairs through the student radio, we have here at Barnsley College also it will help gain more traction for the radio station which is always a positive as it increases listenership.
I hope to achieve by doing this project an increase in listeners for the radio station, but the main purpose is to report on events that are happening both locally and nationally that are not covered by major news brands such as the BBC, I hope to draw attention to local events and get more people supporting local businesses. This idea is relevant today because I will predominantly focus all my stories on things that are happening right now in this current climate, I want to give people another way to get their news, and I want to ensure each package is made to fit my target audience.
There are a variety of skills I will need to make sure I can complete this project in a professional manor. Firstly, I will need to incorporate my communication skills to organise interviews with potential interviewees and when I’m conducting the interview I need to make sure to be empathetic especially if the story is sad. Another skill I need to use is mastering the art of using my voice to convey different emotions during my voiceovers this will add an additional element to the package to make my product sound professional and immerse the listener into the audio package.
I believe by completing my FEP I will gather a wide array of soft and hard skills for example a soft skill that I will gain is the ability to collaborate with other people whether this be guests within the studio or if I go out on the streets to vox pop people. Another soft skill is adaptability which is critical for my project because when things begin to go wrong, I need to be quick on my feet to find a solution, the impact of being adaptable is that the audio packages will not be affected as I will have backups of everything to ensure nothing goes wrong that I cannot fix. On the other hand audio editing is a hard skill, I believe I will acquire this skill because to produce a fantastic piece of work my editing needs to be flawless as the last thing someone wants to listen to is a piece of work that sounds jumpy and is all over the place, the consequence of this is that the target audience would most likely switch off and not tune in again. Another hard skill I will gain from this project is sound design meaning I will understand how to use sound effects and atmosphere to enhance the telling of the story, the impact of this is that the audience again feel immersed within the package and will want to read on.
My idea is challenging and ambitious because I will have to complete 3-5 of these packages and they will all require several interviews and vox pops as a result my time management must be impeccable so that I manage to complete the project without things going wrong. My idea is also challenging because it requires me to do lots of work towards deciding who I want for interviews and why they are relevant to the package, however if done right the project will sound professional and all my points will be back up with expert opinions. To conduct this project, I will have to find relevant sources that I can use to make sure that my product sounds correct for example I will use the BBC and analyse how they put together an audio package for the news I can also do this with other radio platform such as the Global Newsrooms that supply stations like Capital.
The marketing behind this project would include me advertising the audio package on the radio’s Instagram account in hopes to get more people listening to the show and keeping the UK up to date with current affairs. My ideal target audience that I want to aim my content towards would be teens who are trying to find easy ways to access the news, with radio you only have to press a button to turn it on as a result it’s easy for teens to access which would hopefully attract some people towards the project.
This project links to my intended progression plan because I want to go into the world of radio and to start my journey, I need to be able to do a large variety of things so if I get asked to do things I will be able to do anything I am asked, this will hopefully improve my employability level. I could encounter many difficulties during this project however most of these will be technical as a result I need to make sure I am fully made aware of the audio recording system so I can prevent problems before they become major and affect my project.
I believe that to gain a high grade I will need to balance all of my research with the amount of practical product as well as this I need to make sure that I am aiming high and want to get the best interviews I can as well as collecting the best atmosphere I can to hopefully immerse my audience within the news and truly feel the emotions I am trying to convey. To analyse the final product, I will create production blogs each week that will be around 2-3 minutes long and I will tell the examiner what I’ve created so far. Finally, I will output my product onto my FEP website where my examiner can freely see the process of how I created my project.
